Junkyard Gem: 1988 Merkur Scorpio
A very rare first-year Merkur Scorpio (sold in Europe as the Ford Scorpio)For the 1985 model year, the Ford Sierra XR4i was given the same turbocharged Pinto engine as the Mustang SVO and called the Merkur XR4Ti. For 1988, the Ford Scorpio was added to the Merkur lineup.
Visiting a friend's junkyard in Detroit, we found an unexpected jewel: a 1970 Chevrolet Nova, which seemed out of place among all the new vehicles. It must've been someone's hot rod with all the vintage speed stickers on the windows. An "SS" was on the grille, but there was no way to tell if it was legit. The cowl tag, however, denoted it as an original V8 Nova in its original color.
Junkyard Gem: 1976 Ford Elite
Personal luxury coupes were all the rage during the middle 1970s, and the Ford EliteDetroit excelled at creating this type of affordable luxury during the era, and this car has everything from "coffin handle" door pulls to gold shag carpeting.
The engine was partially torn apart, but it was orange so it could've been original—only the numbers on the block would confirm it or not. The interior was pretty nice, with the bench seat and automatic shift on the column—and a tach clamped on it! Too bad cars can't talk.

The new breed of electric hot rodders.Electric conversions have been around for decades, ever since the first Birkenstock-wearing grumps loaded up the bed of their Chevy S10 with lead-acid batteries, and flipped the bird to OPEC. Perhaps this image is your first assumption, that the idea […]

The garage door to the suburban home in northern Ohio opened, and we could see a 1969 Z/28 plainly in the double-car garage. "Karl is the guy who owns the car," Michael Lightbourn said. "It was his father's, and he's got the power of attorney, so in a sense he inherited it, but […]
