Ever since the dawn of hot rodding there have been plenty of drivers surprised by non-descript cars or trucks packed with plenty of dynamite in a sedate package. They're usually plainly wrapped with worn paint and dog dish hubcaps, but it's under the hood that counts when it comes time to making a statement. There's nothing quite like being challenged at the lights by an unsuspecting motorist who looks down their nose at your ride, only to give them a surprise dusting once you hit the gas. In a world of street sleepers anything is possible, especially with today's technology.

The 1956 Ford Fairlane is a diverse vehicle due to its many available options from the factory. The option to place a small - block V - 8 engine in a mid-sized vehicle excited "gearheads" and enthusiasts in the 1950s.

If you grew up in the farming industry surrounded by trucks, tractors, and heavy equipment you get used to not only operating the equipment, but also maintaining it and trying to improve it to perform better. For Jon Unick of Kearney, Nebraska, being born into a farming family meant that he would follow a very distinct path as the years passed by, influencing the road he would follow. The twist being that the family was also heavily into high-performance vehicles, which promised to keep it interesting. With weekdays spent farming, the weekends were reserved for taking in tractor pulls, circle track racing and mud racing as well as cruising the main strip to see the hottest muscle in town. To this day Jon has never owned a car, only trucks, and for his latest build he stayed true to his past.

Having always been a fan of '50s-era Ford pickups, Jon had an idea in mind when deciding to take on his next project. He wanted to use a well patina'd truck as a base and build it into a sleeper with a killer chassis and driveline tucked underneath its weathered skin. He advised us that "it's one thing to slam it to the pavement, it's another thing to make it handle like it's on 'rails with a smokin'-hot V-8 underhood." With this in mind he began the search for a proper donor truck to get started. One afternoon while driving through town he spotted what appeared to be a derelict 1956 Ford F-100 parked beneath a highway overpass. A little research uncovered that it was owned by someone in Florida who had stored it there with no intention of selling it. Jon found out they prized the truck for its original rust-free patina'd body and they had hoped to eventually get it running. As the conversation continued Jon inquired about buying it and the owners asked that he promise to retain its originality by not repainting it, how perfect! A deal was made that also included Jon selling them back the original rolling chassis and driveline.

Find Out What Made This 1956 Chevy Pickup A Complete Surprise

Find Out What Made This 1956 Chevy Pickup A Complete Surprise The first time Rafael Nava saw this beautiful Candy Red ’56 Chevy custom truck he had no idea that it belonged to him. Even after his son, Miguel, handed him the keys, it took a moment for reality to sink in. Rafael, from South San Francisco, retired last year from his family owned janitorial services company. For a long time Miguel had planned to honor the occasion in an extraordinary way. "When I was little, we would go down to Redwood City and watch the cruising," Miguel remembers. "One time, a beautiful Tri-Five Chevy truck came cruising by—all modified, with candy paint and wire wheels. It caught my dad's attention.

Without wasting any time, Jon transported the truck to Randy Lofquist, owner of Dynamic Rides in Kearney, to take on the build. Having worked with Randy and his team on past projects, the pair shared a vision on what it would take to make the truck bitchin. Once the hauler was disassembled it was time to locate a high-performance base that would be able to take plenty of abuse while also offering razor-sharp handling. A call was placed to No Limit Engineering of Dandridge, Tennessee, for one of their Big 10 chassis since they were engineered for excitement. The frame includes their custom front and rear crossmembers as well as their exclusive center X-member, which is a full 10 inchs tall and acts as the heart of the frame to eliminate any possible flex during cornering. Out back a Currie Enterprises 9-inch rear packs 31-spline axles and spins 4.10:1 gears. It's suspended in place by a combination of No Limit's trailing arms with rocker arms (cantilever-style), links, and Panhard bar accented by RideTech billet coilover shocks to keep it all connected. For sports car handling, a No Limit Wide Ride IFS features their exclusive tubular upper and lower control arms deftly matched to their 2-inch dropped Z.G. spindles, RideTech billet coilover shocks, and Dynamic Rides splined antisway bar. If you intend on going wicked fast, you'd better plan on stopping too so a Wilwood 8-inch dual power master pushes fluid through stainless lines to matching 12.19-inch drilled and vented rotors with four-piston calipers out back and 12.88-inch drilled and vented rotors with six-piston calipers in front. To anchor it to the street a set of Forgeline Model RB3C wheels wrapped with Toyo Model R888 low-profile rubber gets it done.

Believe it or not, Ford made these monsters in both 1969 and finally in 1970 when they switched to even larger full-size cars than in previous years. Of the over 1-million full-size Fords made in 1969 Jan's is one of only 88 made with a 4-speed—we cant even guess how many they made in 1970.

If you plan on making a statement you had better bring plenty of horsepower to the party. To create plenty of thunder Jon went straight to Ford Performance for one of their 427ci Crate V-8s packed with all the right bits generating a searing 450hp at 5,600 rpm, as well as rock-solid dependability. To get the power, a fresh small-block was filled with a Scat forged steel crank linked to matching forged steel H-beam connecting rods capped with forged Mahle pistons urged by a hydraulic roller cam. For generating plenty of seamless power, Ford Performance aluminum "X" heads were perfectly matched to an Edelbrock Performer RPM Air-Gap intake breathing deep through a Holley Ultra Street Avenger 770-cfm carb crowned with an air cleaner from C. Cook Enterprises. An MSD ignition lights the fire while spent gases roar through stainless headers from GP to a custom 2 1/2-inch stainless exhaust featuring Dr. Gas Boom Tubes with MagnaFlow mufflers. It all links to a Ford 4R70W massaged to perfection by Bowler Transmissions, in Lawrenceville, Illinois, linked to a fresh aluminum shaft from Denny's Driveshafts. There's even more voodoo underhood since the Dynamic Rides team, including Randy, Dustin Maxson, and Aaron Pullman decided to alter the driveline placement for better weight distribution and an even lower center of gravity. They moved the engine and trans back 7 inches in the chassis from the stock location while also recessing the custom firewall 3 1/2 inches. To complete it they fabricated unique inner wheelwells, radiator, and trans cooler mounts and a special reverse-opening hood.

This 1956 Ford F - 100 has that perfect vintage feeling to do all that, and enough V 8 power that maybe its workdays are not necessarily behind it. Bright red Ford pickups are a staple of Americana as much as gas pumps, corn fields, and baseball caps, and the

Making the decision to retain the truck's original patina was a no-brainer since it's just downright cool, but adding a few extra details created a bit more personality. The Dynamic Rides team got busy tucking the bumpers, rerouting the exhaust trough running boards, and adding custom rear wheeltubs. Jon decided to include another twist by adding a subtle coating of PPG Meadow Green and custom bronze both under the hood and inside. The truck was prepped and Randy laid down the classic vibe, bringing a special slice of allure to the mix. To refresh in the interior of the cab, the dash was filled with Dakota Digital VHX dials to track the vitals, while an ididit tilt column wears a Budnik steering wheel (modified by Dynamic Rides) and shifts click through a unit from Lokar. Cool breezes move thanks to Vintage Air while an American Autowire Highway 22 wiring kit adds life. To complete the comfort zone a pair of Glide Engineering buckets was covered in gray leather with matching door and kick panels, accented by green square-weave carpeting. This isn't just another old patina'd pickup with fancy wheels, it's a wolf in sheep's clothing ready to take on anything that might be up to the challenge, and to us that's the real deal.

Giant American Made Hemi Heads for Your Small-Block Ford! .
Like you, when we first looked at these heads, we imagined them hanging out of the engine compartment of a Model A or 1933 Ford. The real market might be X275 radial racers that you see at events like No Mercy in South Georgia. It makes sense when you consider these heads are capable of flowing 471 cfm at 0.800 lift on the intake side and 320 cfm on the exhaust side when they are prepped for racing. Since the Radial classes have turbo-size restrictions, racers are forced to push both cubic inches and cylinder head flow to make power.
