I don’t think we ’ve peaked yet. So far, most research for school age children has focused on behavioral and emotional regulation, and teaching social skills, and none have been conducted on a large scale.

The conventional wisdom in the car business is that the days of the hallowed family sedan are numbered, soon to be replaced by all shapes, sizes, and demeanors of sport-utility vehicles.

To be sure passenger-car sales are sputtering. According to Autodata, they’re down by 10.3% year-to-date over the first 11 months of 2016, while crossover SUVs are up by 8.7%. And the market is expanding far beyond its core of growing families to encompass singles and empty nesters, as evidenced by a spike in both supply and demand among small crossovers. Sales here are led by the compact Nissan Rogue (up by 25.5% so far this year), Chevrolet Equinox (+19.8%), and Toyota RAV4 (+19.1%).

VW to demonstrate its electric future in 2018 Pikes Peak race

VW to demonstrate its electric future in 2018 Pikes Peak race Volkswagen announced it will field an electric car, which it teased with an image, in the 2018 run of the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb. In 2015 the overall winner, beating the times of even combustion engine cars, was driver Rhys Millen in a specially designed electric race car from Latvian company Drive eO. As press materials for the race note, electric cars don't suffer from oxygen starvation as they gain altitude, something with which the combustion engine cars must contend.

The logical result of this is what Rough Type's Nicholas Carr offers as " peak code." We can't program around every future. And in ideal worlds, we might extend Sachs argument to anything at all: bridges, recipes, art, architecture.

Have we hit peak music? Why would some people feel that we 're eventually going to create "most of the code that will ever be needed"? Is America headed for a financial crisis in 2017?

The ice-coldest segment of the new-vehicle market right now is among large cars, with sales plunging by a whopping 24.7% so far this year, as even the segment’s most-stalwart customers, namely law enforcement agencies, are replacing pursuit sedans with SUVs.

Automakers unveiled no fewer than a dozen new SUVs at this year’s Los Angeles Auto Show, and the genre now encompasses models from nameplates not usually associated with trucks like Bentley, Jaguar, and Maserati, with other exotic nameplates including Lamborghini, Rolls-Royce, and even Ferrari readying crossovers of their own.

Car companies are extending their lines with a parade of ever-smaller crossovers, including the just-introduced subcompact Ford EcoSport and the coming Nissan Kicks and Hyundai Kona. At the other end of size spectrum, there’s a new large crossover coming from Subaru, the Ascent, while Lexus stretches the RX to accommodate a third-row seat in a new 350L version.

For the Mustang, the setup is rated at 700 peak horsepower and 610 pound-feet of torque. That's a boost of 240 hp over a stock Mustang GT, and an additional 190 pound-feet of torque — and it's far above the Shelby ratings, too.

But is the U.S. also headed for an electric car crisis? They reported fuel economy is down 0.9 mpg from the peak reached in August 2014, but on the plus side, it’s still up 4.8 mpg from when the university began this study in 2007. Not hybrids and EVs, but trucks and SUVs .

With fewer market niches to fill, automakers are slicing and dicing SUV categories to help meet the demand, with brands like BMW and Mercedes-Benz extending their present model lines with swoopy four-door-coupe-like crossovers that emphasize the “sport” in SUV, but at the expense of their overall “utility.” And then there’s the compact The Range Rover Evoqu, which is alternately available in a two-door convertible version.

According to the research firm LMC Automotive, more than 150 different SUVs will be clogging the U.S. market by 2020, which is double the number buyers found in dealers’ showrooms back in 2010.

On the downside, both transaction prices and average fuel consumption among new vehicles are rising in direct correlation with the popularity of crossover SUVs, which tend to be costlier and less fuel-efficient than comparably sized sedans. The average fuel economy of new vehicles sold in the U.S. in November was 25.0 mpg, which is up 4.9 mpg since October 2007, according to the University of Michigan’s Transportation Research Institute. What’s more, the average new-vehicle transaction price reached hit a new all-time high of $35,852 last month, according to, which represents a 2.3% increase over November 2016, and is 12.1% higher than it was in November of 2012.

Some wonder if the market might not become saturated before long, with fickle consumers, abruptly moving on to another, even unexpected genre – let’s say crossover pickup trucks for the sake of argument – just as they did back when they ditched station wagons for minivans, then moved on to truck-based SUVs, and eventually crossover SUVs. And those were family buyers, today’s crossover market has expanded greatly to encompass a rich stew of demographics.

Perhaps a better way for automakers to address the growing dominance of these tall wagons is instead of just building more crossovers, to try making their car lines more crossover-like. That means somehow bucking the “longer and lower” trend that has dominated auto design since the post-World War II era to make the next generation of sedans more amenable to a wider range of consumers (some of which may, unfortunately, run counter to the purposeful emphasis on making a car’s aerodynamics ever sleeker to help meet increasingly strict fuel economy requirements).

That means, among other things, making it easier for taller riders to climb in and out of a passenger car, especially in the rear where swoopy roof designs and odd door shapes too-often require a contortionist’s talents to access. A taller roofline affords added headroom, while a slightly taller ground clearance and more upright seating position helps improve a vehicle’s outward visibility. And if we’ll all be owning self-driving vehicles in the next 20 or 30 years as some industry prognosticators predict, they might as well be comfortable, right?

This spike in demand has led many experts to warn of a near-term pony shortage, and led to fears that the world may be approaching “ Peak Pony”, the point at which nations are no longer able to meet their vital pony needs.

This type of approach is not without precedent. Faced with a burgeoning interest in SUVs, but with no model of its own to sell at the time, Subaru took its Legacy station wagon, jacked up its ground clearance a few inches, and added sport-utility styling cues to create the 1994 Outback, which is regarded as the first contemporary crossover vehicle. For a time, Subaru also offered Outback versions of the Legacy sedan, but that was an idea whose time had yet to come. Volvo has since taken more or less the same approach with Cross-Country versions of not only its V60 and V90 station wagons, but the S60 sedan, which could provide the template for future crossover sedans.

Or in another 10 years we could be talking about the unexpected occurrence of crossover pickup trucks sitting in the nation’s driveways.
