The Continental Has Almost Doubled Lincoln's Market Share in Big Luxury Cars
Can we stop talking about how Lincoln needs to be "saved" now?
The new Lincoln Continental is doing exactly what it is supposed to do as a flagship. Not only is it selling well, especially compared to the Taurus-based MKS it replaced, but it’s giving the entire Lincoln lineup a boost. The Continental commands 14 percent market share of large luxury sedans, according to Automotive News, putting it in third place behind the the Mercedes-Benz S-Class and its fellow front-wheel-drive-based domestic adversary, the Cadillac XTS. (For reference, the old MKS was only able to scrape up 7.2 percent market share in its final year of production.

In 2016, the luxury automobile segment represented nearly 60 per cent of the increase in overall new vehicles sales.

One of the most defining automotive trends in Canada in recent years, aside from the record-breaking number of vehicles sold, is the rising popularity of luxury vehicles. Today, luxury automobiles comprise just over 11 per cent of new vehicle sales in Canada.

Jaguar Land Rover May Look To Buy Another Luxury Brand

Jaguar Land Rover May Look To Buy Another Luxury Brand Owner Tata Group has given the British marque full financial support.By the end of March, Jaguar Land Rover had sold a record-breaking 604,009 vehicles around the world, thanks in part to higher demand from regions like the U.S. and China. By June, owner Tata Motors had amassed $6.1 billion in cash and equivalents. So, it seems the British marque is well on track to break its sales record for 2017... and the acquisition of another brand could boost the marque well past one million in sales.

Many car manufacturers that market to U.S. drivers have heeded the rising popularity of hybrid vehicles and designed models to meet the growing demand. This type of automobile has been around for many years, but only widely Many luxury auto -makers have released hybrid vehicles.

When I began working in the retail car industry in the mid-1970s, luxury cars were less common. I remember seeing occasional Cadillacs, Lincoln Continentals, Ford Thunderbirds, and Chrysler New Yorkers, to name a few. Mostly people in higher income brackets owned these vehicles.

The majority of vehicles throughout the late 1970s and 1980s fell into the entry-level and mid-size segments. Pickups sold well in rural markets during those decades, but they were not considered luxury vehicles.

Since the early 1990s, the luxury segment has grown steadily. By 1990, it represented slightly more than 3.1 per cent of the new vehicle market, and by 2000, that figure had climbed to nearly six per cent.

Today, luxury automobiles comprise just over 11 per cent of new vehicle sales in Canada. The popular luxury brands from the ’70s and ’80s are still around, of course, but the category has expanded to include names like Acura, Lexus, BMW, Audi, Jaguar, Land Rover, Mercedes-Benz, and Infiniti, among others.

Alfa Romeo and FCA Trademark “Giulietta” with U.S. Patent Office

Alfa Romeo and FCA Trademark “Giulietta” with U.S. Patent Office Alfa Romeo and FCA Trademark “Giulietta” with U.S. Patent Office Rumors of the Alfa Romeo Giulietta's death may be greatly exaggerated: Fiat Chrysler Automobiles recently filed a trademark application with the United States Patent and Trademark Office for the long-running Italian car nameplate.Filed by FCA last week, the trademark application signals an "intent to use" by the Italian-American company. Whether the Giulietta name will be used in the United States on a warmed-over version of the current Giulietta compact hatchback or a completely redesigned car remains to be seen.

As the popularity of motorized vehicles grew in the early-20th century, the larger a car was the more luxurious it was. Think of the big and brash Cadillac and Duesenberg luxury sedans from the 1920s and ‘30s — all larger than the less expensive Chevys, Fords and Plymouths.

• The average price of standard and luxury vehicles continues to rise • The luxury and sports car industry comprises of 17% of the market. • Luxury automobile manufacturers utilize several pricing strategies to extract the maximum surplus from consumers.

When discussing luxury autos, we must include pickups, SUVs, and crossovers. Cadillac Escalade, Volvo XC90, Porsche Cayenne, Honda Ridgeline, Ford F-150, and Chevrolet Silverado are among the many models equipped with luxury features and amenities

Several factors have contributed to the steady rise of luxury auto brands, including low financing/lease rates, the growing affluence of middle- and upper-income consumers, the abundance of money available to Baby Boomers, and the growing appeal of luxury brands in general.

Some brands have appealed to younger and less affluent buyers by creating smaller SUVs and entry-level versions of their premium vehicles. The belief is that if car buyers enjoy driving an entry-level version of their brand, they might be inclined to move up in the future.

This growing appetite for luxury automobiles among middle-market consumers is part of a larger trend toward a more luxurious lifestyle. Starbucks, Apple, and Michael Kors are premium brands that command higher prices than conventional products, and consumers are willing to pay extra for them.

That same mindset applies to luxury automobiles. Car buyers have strong feelings about their vehicles, and their reasons for buying luxury brands are often complex. The challenge for any luxury brand — whether it is Land Rover, Gucci, or Louis Vuitton — is creating a unique product or experience that will provide an emotional connection to that product (and brand).

For automakers who offer luxury models, that emotional connection boils down to the brand’s prestige and heritage, perceived quality, along with other features, such as enhanced performance, technology, and the ownership/driving experience.

Even automotive brands that do not fall into the luxury category compete with traditional luxury brands in terms of styling, performance, and technology.

GM To Move Current Truck Production To Oshawa

GM To Move Current Truck Production To Oshawa General Motors has announced it is shifting production of its current full-size pickups to Oshawa while it tools up its Michigan and Indiana plants to build next-generation versions of the popular trucks. Automotive News reports that GM will ship partly-assembled versions of the 2018 Chevrolet Silverado and 2018 GMC Sierra trucks from Fort Wayne, Indiana, where 500 newly hired workers will finish building and paint them. It's good news for an Oshawa factory whose future was in doubt. According to GM Canada, it currently builds the Cadillac XTS and Chevrolet Equinox. The manufacturer recently refocused Equinox production to Mexico and the full-size XTS sedan competes in a category losing steam in the face of the growing popularity of upscale SUVs and crossovers. This wouldn't be the first time GM has built two generations of one model at the same time. It did so most recently when the recently redesigned Equinox launched, and sent outgoing-generation models to Ingersoll for finishing touches. And Fiat Chrysler Automobiles will build its current 2018 Ram 1500 alongside a brand new version when the redesigned truck debuts next year. GM expects to the Oshawa plant to turn out about 60,000 trucks a year, but the company hasn't committed to a fixed timeline for Oshawa truck production. Spokesperson Jennifer Wright told Automotive News that "the length of the program in Oshawa will be dependent on market demand.

For instance, Toyota, Honda, Ford, Chevrolet, and Chrysler have introduced new safety features (forward-collision warning systems with pedestrian detection and automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane-departure alert with steering assist) — features that are available on many premium luxury models.

The automotive landscape continues to evolve, and luxury automobile brands have completely transformed the ownership/driving experience in recent decades. I suspect that they will continue to shape the automotive experience for years to come.

Test Drive: 2018 Cadillac CTS Premium Luxury .
It’s the little details, sometimes. In many areas where it counts, the 2018 Cadillac CTS feels cautiously calibrated to create a satisfying luxury performance drive – and one that demonstrates plenty of attention to how things feel and respond at the tips of the driver’s fingers and toes. The engine is loud when pushed, but sounds glorious, athletic, heavily mechanical, and increasingly angry the faster you get it spinning. It’s small stuff that many an owner may not even notice. But luxury fans love little details and the CTS is full of them, right down to the signature tactile sensation dialled into much of the cabin and drive. This starts inside, where almost everything is heavy. The subtly solid and muted jiggle through the cabin when the engine turns on and off. The doors, and their handles. The signal stalk. The power windows, which seal with a discreet thrrrph when closed. The motorized sliding centre console cover. The shift lever. Virtually everything you can manipulate on board the CTS operates with a consistent sensation that’s heavy and velvety and substantial. Many of these controls and provisions require just a touch more effort and force from your fingertips to manipulate than expected – as if designers were keen on ensuring drivers feel a density when they interface with the car. Or, the steering. On the highway, there’s a very slight numbness on centre, to keep the CTS from feeling twitchy or nervous.
