Car Review: 2018 Ford Fusion Energi

Car Review: 2018 Ford Fusion Energi Piloting the Ford Fusion Energi engenders an almost Zen-like calmHey, it’s not like I’m a complete Luddite, more like I’m not an early adopter. I did cast aside skepticism regarding hybrid vehicles years ago and I’m more than willing to look upon them as useful, efficient and, sometimes, even fun to drive. Truth be told, though, I haven’t exactly waded into the even more fuel-efficient plug-in hybrid pond. Call it a toe dip.

Terrific! I’ve now figured out the absolute best reason for owning a plug-in hybrid, and it has nothing to do with superior fuel economy or reduced emissions. It’s the fact the recharging stations at the local IKEA are located close to the store entrance. No more having to schlep a pushcart full of Kallax or Billys to the back of the parking lot. Sign me up!

Report: Ford Fusion to Live On as a Subaru Outback Fighter

Report: Ford Fusion to Live On as a Subaru Outback Fighter The familiar name may be saved from the scrapyard and applied to a lifted station wagon. It seems likely that this rumored Fusion wagon, possibly to be called the Fusion Active, will be a version of the Europe-market Mondeo wagon (pictured), which is nearly identical to the U.S.-market Fusion. If it follows the formula of the popular Outback, expect it to feature body cladding, a bit of extra ground clearance, and all-wheel drive. This would mirror Ford’s U.S. strategy for the compact Focus, which will be reborn as the Focus Active, a slightly lifted variant of the next-generation hatchback.

So, on a spur-of-the-moment decision, I thought I’d give Ford’s Fusion Energi a try. I’ve always thought the mid-sized family sedan a handsome design and, in topline Platinum trim, suitably upscale for the price. Sure, it’s no longer the last word in plug-ins, but it’s still pretty good. But now, Ford wants to retire the entire model lineup — and several others — after this generation because car sales are in a steep dive and supposedly everybody wants to drive a crossover. Frankly, I believe this action is both extreme and premature.

However, the Fusion is not pining for the fjords just yet. In fact, FoMoCo has introduced a number of tweaks for the 2019 Fusion, including new “state-of-the-art” (according to Ford, at least) Co-Pilot360 driver-assist technology, plus sleeker styling and 20 per cent greater projected all-electric driving range for the plug-in Energi.

What the Heck is Active Nibble Control? We just stumbled upon one of the very weirdest names of all weirdly named things in the world of the automobile. So, just what in the world is steering nibble? Here’s a hint: it’s not what happens when your ride’s steering gets the munchies.

Car Reviews . Three trim levels offer the Ford Fusion Energi plenty of specification, and high levels of safety. Safety equipment includes blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, and lane departure warning as part of the Driver Assist package.

Not that the current car is particular deficient in this regard. The Energi can travel about 1,000 kilometres on a full tank of gas and battery charge, which gives it one of the longest combined ranges — according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency — for any plug-in hybrid sold in North America.

Naturally, the beauty of the plug-in hybrid setup is that it uses both electric batteries and gas engines for power. So, there’s none of this “range anxiety” that’s worrisome to owners of pure electric vehicles. Essentially, plug-in hybrids are electric vehicles until the battery runs down. Then, they work like a conventional hybrid. The car’s software, as well as regenerative braking, recycles energy to the battery otherwise lost when the driver hits the brakes. According to Ford, the Fusion Energi’s all-electric range is an estimated 34 kilometres.

As for my gasoline consumption during my week with the Fusion Energi, I averaged 6.0L/100 kilometres, with a significant portion of highway driving, which is not a hybrid’s strongest suit. Even accounting for home electricity usage, the Energi isn’t going to put you into the poor house.

Ford offers Hybrid and Diesel Taxi Options

Under the hood of the front-wheel-drive Fusion is a 141-horsepower, 2.0-litre Atkinson-cycle four-cylinder engine — same as in the Fusion hybrid, the one you don’t have to plug in. On the alternative power side, there’s a 118-horsepower electrical motor/generator, with lithium-ion batteries to save weight and generate more power. Combined maximum output is a useful, if not particularly scintillating 188 horsepower. Then again, the Fusion is a family sedan, not a sports car. (But in case you’re wondering, the BMW i8 pushes out 369 net horsepower, almost double.

It still feels eerie, if you’re not used to it, gliding off on electrical power in total silence. The only time I heard anything approximating noise was when I needed maximum A/C to cool off a hot interior, the extra load causing a thrum from under the hood. Even the four-cylinder kicks in unobtrusively when gas power is required. If nothing else, piloting the Fusion Energi engenders almost Zen-like calm.

Carrying all this powertrain technology around, the Fusion weighs a rather hefty 1,815 kilograms — a hefty two tons. Despite this, acceleration when needed is reasonable, thanks to the instantaneous torque from the electric motor. The sedan’s ride is on the comfy side, although the car’s Michelin Energy Saver tires don’t help the cause. A fuel-efficient passenger tire “ideally suited for drivers looking to maximize fuel economy without compromising long tread life and all-season safety,” its low-rolling resistance lets the Fusion coast along for great distances without throttle, allowing the battery pack to recharge. The problem is that there’s not much give to them, and even the smallest road imperfections are felt. Is that an acceptable compromise for better fuel economy? Maybe.

Test Drive: 2018 Ford Fusion Sport

Test Drive: 2018 Ford Fusion Sport
The Ford Fusion Sport is a blast to push hard.
Ford’s Fusion has been a fixture in the North American automotive landscape since 2006, with the current second-generation model debuting in 2013. With Ford’s recent announcement that it’s getting out of the sedan business when the current models age out, the Fusion may only have a couple years left. That’s a pity, really.

The Ford Fusion Hybrid is often a gasoline-electric hybrid powered version in the mid-sized Ford Fusion sedan manufactured and marketed by Ford , now in the

Less acceptable are the Energi’s brakes, or more specifically, the amount of regenerative braking — which is to say very little. The Fusion would benefit from something similar to the Chevrolet Volt’s “regen on demand” paddle on the back of its steering wheel, which helps recoup more energy when braking. Holding it acts like pulling on the emergency brake handle in a regular car.

The other big compromise to the Energi is the lack of trunk space thanks to the location of the battery pack — a paltry 232.2 litres, about half that of a regular Fusion and some 100 litres less than the Fusion Hybrid. Pack light for weekend getaways.

In Platinum trim, there’s not much compromise to the Energi’s cabin. It’s a very comfortable, suitably upscale environment befitting the top trim level’s $45,000 sticker price. Muted yet complementary two-tone colours, quilted stitched door inserts, and a rotary gearshift similar to Jaguar — although it doesn’t rise up from the centre console when the engine is started — are just some of the nicer touches. And not only does the instrument panel offer a full range of information for the most fuel frugal of drivers, it’s polite as well, thanking you for driving a hybrid upon exit.

As hybrids go, the Energi loses some of its technical edge to the newer mid-sized plug-ins — the Honda Clarity, Hyundai Sonata and Kia Optima being the most obvious. But it’s user-friendly, competitively priced and genuinely comfortable. It also benefits from electric vehicle incentives from Quebec and BC, though it looks like Ontario will kill off its very generous electric vehicle incentive, which would have rewarded the Fusion Energy owner with a $7,000 rebate.

I’d truly hate to see Ford abandon the mid-sized sedan segment. I’d like to see it look at the long game and re-commit to giving buyers desirous of fuel-efficient family transportation a reason to look at the Fusion Energi.
