Police are looking for a convicted murderer who escaped from the minimum security unit at Mission Institution on Friday.

Robert Raymond Dezwaan was missing during a head count at 3:45 p.m. The Correctional Service of Canada and Mission RCMP are now searching for him.

Dezwaan strangled 16-year-old Cherish Oppenheim to death near Merrit in 2001. He was out on bail at the time for attacking another girl in Kelowna.

He was convicted of second-degree murder in 2003 and is serving a life sentence.

Dezwaan, 53, is 6’1″ and 186 lbs. He is bald, has green eyes and a fair complexion.

If he is spotted or you have information on his possible whereabouts, call your local police or 911. Do not approach him.

Dezwaan’s son, Kruse Wellwood, raped and murdered a teen girl on Vancouver Island in 2010.
