Ottawa police and Transport Canada have been notified of an Air Canada commuter plane pilot spotted an unmanned aerial drone flying parallel to the landing aircraft at about 5:15 p.m. Tuesday.

According to Jazz Aviation, flight AC8975 from Montreal was attempting to land at the Ottawa International Airport when the pilot spotted a drone hovering at around 1,500 feet just off the plane’s left wing.

The pilot called in the sighting and requested another runway to land on, in order to avoid the device.

“The aircraft landed in Ottawa safely and without incident, said Manon Stuart, a spokesperson for Jazz Aviation.

“This was immediately reported to the regulatory authorities and local law enforcement for investigation.”

In Canada it is illegal to fly a drone at more than 295 feet, according to Transport Canada.

In addition, drones cannot be flown within a nine-kilometre radius of an airport, at night, in clouds or anywhere the device cannot be seen by its operator. Drone owners must also have their name, address and telephone number clearly marked on their device.

Failure to observe these rules is punishable by fines of up to $3,000.
