Quebecers face possible post-flood critter woes

Quebecers face possible post-flood critter woes MONTREAL - Even as swollen rivers have receded in Quebec, some experts suggest historic flooding this year could mean critter and pest-related woes in months and years to come. For now, heavy water accumulation has created standing pools of water which could translate into fertile ground for mosquito populations this year. "I do expect several times the usual number of mosquitoes," said Paul Maloney, an entomologist based in western Montreal, part of which was hit hard this spring.Maloney says one reason for a potential bumper crop is that ponds have remained full after a combination of saturated soil and repeated rainfalls.

My next-door neighbors and their three young children were evacuated by boat halfway down the street. When warm weather arrives early, it leads to premature spring snowmelt and runoff. As I made the U- turn , the street turned into a river and my car began to fill with water .

Warmer oceans have also led to sea level rise and higher sea levels create higher storm surges, which, in turn , push water farther inland. The president's plan deserves support. We must not force our children to pay the price if we don't limit the pollution that causes climate change. Quebec .

In addition, two children’s parties where young people played in or near the pool turned tragic a matter of hours. In both cases boys who were guests at the parties were found in the bottom of the pool.

In Sherbrooke, a call was made to 911 at 11:15 a.m. Saturday for an 8-year-old boy found inert in a family pool in the Jacques-Cartier borough.

Adults at the scene performed resuscitation and paramedics took over, but the child was clinging to life late Saturday night in the hospital.

The parents were met by Sherbrooke police who are conducting the investigation.

The day before in the Outaouais, an 11-year-old boy drowned in a residential pool in Chelsea at another children’s party. He was found unconscious at the bottom of the pool around 9 p.m.  The police and paramedics were unable to resuscitate him.

This is likely an accidental death, but an investigation will attempt to determine the circumstances.
