Two people have been charged after allegedly capturing and killing a seagull at Country Thunder Saskatchewan in Craven this weekend.

Police had no other information on how the bird was caught or killed, but said two males — one adult and one youth — were charged under the provincial Wildlife Regulations which prohibit the killing of an animal without a licence.

The two have been banned from attending future Country Thunder events at Craven.

“This one here is bizarre to say the least,” said Gerry Krochak, director of  marketing and media for Country Thunder. “I can’t speak to anyone that could be so stupid. When I first heard about it, I couldn’t quite believe it to be honest with you. We have the names of the two individuals and they’ll never be back on this site. We certainly don’t condone this. It was dealt with severely and swiftly.”

In all, police responded to 135 calls for service at the annual country music festival this year, up from 114 in 2016.

Police only laid one impaired driving charge this year outside the festival site, a reduction from most other years according to Sgt. Craig Cleary.

“Impaired driving is  a priority nationally and divisionally,” he said. “I expect a lot of the public attention, the negativity surrounding impaired driving is sinking in. Our presence in and around the site was very pronounced and noticeable. Whether it was that or the decision making of the public, together i think that contributed to the reduction of impaired driving instances.”

Among other calls for service over the weekend, police also dealt with six assault calls, five for disturbing the peace, one break and enter in which a camper saw someone trying to break into a trailer and one obstruction offence in which police took two males to cells after one tried to interfere with police attempting to arrest another over an incident involving fireworks.
