One person has died following an apartment fire in downtown Hamilton around 1 a.m. Friday.

Hamilton Fire responded to a multiple alarm fire that broke out in a unit on the 16th floor of a building at 95 Hess St. S.

When firefighters entered the apartment, they found a single male occupant with no vital signs. The unidentified male was transported to hospital, where he succumbed to their injuries. His identity has not been released.

Fire officials say that the damages were contained to only the one apartment, with damages estimated at around $20,000.

One person is dead following a two-alarm blaze at an apartment building in Toronto's west-end early Tuesday morning. Hamilton . Kingston. Lethbridge. Pegg said the building, which is operated by Toronto Community Housing , was fully inspected this year.

The building at 95 Hess St. S. is owned and operated under the City of Hamilton “CityHousing” program, one of the largest housing providers in Ontario, according to a City of Hamilton web site.

This is the second fire at 95 Hess St. S. since August. At that time, a fire broke out within a fifth floor apartment, and spread onto a sixth floor balcony causing an estimated $140,000 in damages.

The Office of the Fire Marshal has been notified and is investigating the cause of the fire.
