  One dead after blaze in Hamilton community housing apartment One person has died following an apartment fire in downtown Hamilton around 1 a.m. Friday. Hamilton Fire responded to a multiple alarm fire that broke out in a unit on the 16th floor of a building at 95 Hess St. S. When firefighters entered the apartment, they found a single male occupant with no vital signs. The unidentified male was transported to hospital, where he succumbed to their injuries. His identity has not been released.Fire officials say that the damages were contained to only the one apartment, with damages estimated at around $20,000.

“It was such a loud bang … My son thought it was thunder, but it was a huge explosion,” said Mary Zilba, whose condo overlooks the marina. “I ran over to the window and there was a massive cloud of black smoke. People are saying that lightning hit the boat, but it’s speculation.”

Ash rained down on neighbouring vessels in the marina, including the $30-million, 150-foot super yacht, After Eight. 

“All the other boats were getting out of there,” said Zilba. “The After Eight took off so fast … I couldn’t believe how fast its crew scrambled to get the yacht out of there.”

The flames were contained to one boat, but a nearby vessel did suffer some heat damage, according to the Vancouver fire department.

False Creek Ferries suspended water-taxi service to Quayside Marina due to the fire.

No injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
