The Calgary Humane Society is looking for help from the public to identify the owner of an abandoned dog found in a dumpster.

The mixed-breed puppy was found in a garbage container near Anderson Road and 24th Street S.W. at approximately 6 a.m. on Tuesday.

The animal was found alive but in “severe medical distress” and may have been in the dumpster for a long as 48 hours, the humane society said.

The approximately eight- to 10-week old female dog was euthanized at the direction of veterinarians.

“Regardless of the source of this dog’s catastrophic injuries, discarding this visibly injured puppy in a dumpster was a callous criminal act,” said Brad Nichols, the senior manager of animal cruelty investigations at the Calgary Humane Society.

“This puppy deserves justice and we hope the public can help us serve just that by providing information toward the identity of the individual responsible.”

Peace officers are asking anyone with information about suspicious activity in the area between Oct. 8 and 10, or information about the identity of the dog, the owner or discarding party, to contact the Calgary Humane Society.

It’s believed the dog was possibly a Labrador/Australian Cattle cross. The puppy was white in colour with faint grey spots.
