York Regional Police allege the suspect posted photos of himself in police uniform online to ask for money via social media. He’s now charged with impersonating an officer.

A Toronto man accused of misrepresenting himself as a cop on social media and asking people for money has been charged with impersonating a police officer.


York police have arrested a Scarborough man they allege posed as an officer online to ask for money.

Police starting looking into the case on Nov. 18 after receiving a report that a man was posing as a York Regional Police officer on the internet and asking those he befriended on social media for money.

“The investigation revealed that the suspect was posting images of police equipment and paraphernalia as well as pictures of himself in a police uniform,” said York police in a news release Thursday.

On Wednesday, police arrested a suspect in Toronto. Investigators found items consistent with “impersonation of a police officer” while executing a search warrant on his Scarborough-area home, York police said.

Di Yu, also known as Jason, 32, now faces two charges of impersonating a peace officer.
