An Environment Canada extreme cold warning remains in effect Sunday for the city of Edmonton, St. Albert and Sherwood Park, with an extreme wind chill bringing temperatures near -40. According to the national weather watchdog, the extreme wind chill will be primarily during the morning and in outlying areas near Anthony Henday Drive.

Risks are greater for young children, older adults, people with chronic illnesses, people working or exercising outdoors, and those without proper shelter.

Environment Canada issues extreme cold warnings when very cold temperatures or wind chill creates an elevated risk to health such as frost bite and hypothermia.

Today’s daytime high is expected to reach -13 C with a nighttime low of -23 C. The wind is expected to continue into Monday with temperatures reaching -15 C but a 15 km/h windchill will make it feel like -28.

Extreme cold warnings are in place for much of the province, from as far south as Drumhellar and Three Hills and stretching north to Cold Lake, St. Paul and Peace River.

Snowfall warnings are also in place in the most southern points of the province in Lethbridge and Cardston, where 10 to 15 cm of snow is expected.
