  Gerald Stanley trial: As jury selection begins, Saskatchewan farmer pleads not guilty in Colten Boushie death As hundreds of potential jurors were being whittled down to 12 plus two alternates, Gerald Stanley pleaded not guilty to the charge of second-degree murder in the death of Colten Boushie. Stanley is accused of fatally shooting Boushie, a 22-year-old resident of Red Pheasant First Nation, on Aug. 9, 2016, after Boushie and four friends drove onto Stanley’s property in the Rural Municipality of Glenside. A full day was set aside Monday for jury selection in the Town of Battleford, with Stanley’s trial scheduled to take place at the Battleford Court of Queen’s Bench from Jan. 30 until Feb. 15.

BATTLEFORD, Sask. — Veteran Saskatchewan reporter Manfred Joehnck has died.

Joehnck worked for the Missinipi Broadcasting Corporation, which announced the death in a story that was posted on its website Monday.

MBC says Joehnck died suddenly in the Battleford, Sask., where he was covering the murder trial of Gerald Stanley, a farmer accused of killing Colten Boushie of Red Pheasant First Nation.

A cause of death wasn’t given.

Joehnck, who was 64, was a familiar name and face for television viewers across the province as a news anchor for CTV Regina from 2001 to 2011.

Prior to that, he was the news director at CKRM Radio in Regina for 14 years.

“Joehnck also did some work with MBC in the 1980s, training young journalists on how to use equipment, resources and interviews and how to tell a story,” the MBC story said.

“Since 2012, MBC listeners have been treated to hundreds of Indigenous news stories told in Joehnck’s trademark style.”

MBC serves the Indigenous community and operates a radio network throughout Saskatchewan.

Joehnck was its legislative correspondent and covered current affairs for the Regina and southern Saskatchewan region, according to the MBC website.
