Former Hells Angels hitman René Charlebois was found dead by Sûreté du Québec on September 25, 2013. His identity had been compromised after the Hells Angels stole the laptop of an OPP biker expert.

He was once a feared enforcer for the Hells Angels, called upon to collect debts from gamblers — and even to kill — as part of the world’s largest outlaw motorcycle gang.

But today, Paris Christoforou is nowhere to be seen after narrowly escaping hitmen in Toronto and Montreal.

His enemies have grown to include members of the powerful Hells Angels chapters from Sherbrooke and Trois-Rivières, Que., which kicked him out of the international club in the fall, police and underworld sources say.

Christoforou, 41, has stopped appearing at regular GTA haunts and police say they no longer know where to find him. The Star was also not able to locate him.

The latest attempt on his life came in Montreal in late January. Montreal police refuse to provide information on this attack, saying only that it’s an ongoing investigation.

But police sources told the Star it was at least the second attempt on Christoforou’s life in less than six months.

In the most recent attempt on his life, a hooded gunman opened fire on Christoforou as he sat in a parked vehicle outside the Starbucks at Sherway Gardens in Etobicoke last August. Christoforou escaped with minor injuries but his companion, Mark Peretz, was seriously hurt.

No arrests have been made in either attack.

Christoforou was in the news in 2006, when he and Peretz were sentenced to nine years in prison for a botched shooting at a Toronto sandwich shop that left bystander Louise Russo paralyzed.

Since his release from prison in March 2012, Christoforou has lost support of powerful Quebec bikers at a time when the Quebecers are pushing hard into Ontario, sources say.

“Ontario is the golden crown of organized crime,” retired RCMP organized crime analyst Pierre de Champlain said in an interview.

He said the bikers are drawn west by the size of the Ontario market, which boasts almost seven million people in the GTA alone compared to about 8.4 million people in the entire province of Quebec.

“With the population they have, organized crime has a lot of money to make there,” de Champlain said of Ontario. “In Quebec, maybe the Hells Angels have peaked and have to look elsewhere.”

Sources say Christoforou’s recent troubles began in 2017, when he accused a senior Hells Angel from London, Ont., of skimming proceeds from an online gambling enterprise and investing the money in Muskoka real estate, without telling his partners.

Christoforou took his complaint to senior Hells Angels in Quebec. But rather than back him, they stripped him of his Hells Angels patch.

For Christoforou, whose hangouts included a coffee shop on the Danforth, the decision was devastating to his gambling business. And when he went to Quebec in January to muster support, sources say he ended up the target of a murder attempt.

It’s a far cry from the years when Christoforou was feared on the streets and trusted with big jobs for organized criminals.

In 2004, he was part of a hit team that set out to gun down Sicilian mobster Michele Modica, who owed money to an online gambling site jointly run by the late mobster Vito Rizzuto and Hells Angels from London, Ont.

Their trial heard that Peretz was the driver of the stolen van and Christoforou fired at least one shot from a pistol. A stray bullet fired by Anthony Borrelli left Louise Russo, an innocent mother of three, paralyzed from the waist down.

The shooting was a disaster for the local Hells Angels, who were in the midst of a public relations blitz that included paying for a billboard alongside the northbound Don Valley Parkway with the words “Still Fighting for Democracy & Freedom.” The club had also taken out newspaper ads, run toy drives for sick children and made an online push to support food banks.

After Christoforou was charged, the Central Canada Hells Angels issued a statement saying they were “sickened by the senseless act of violence that has violated Mrs. Russo’s life.”

The Sherbrooke Hells Angels have enjoyed strong influence in Ontario since at least the 1980s, de Champlain said, and played a strong hand in the establishment of the Hells Angels chapter in London.

“For several years the Hells Angels want to modernize and develop, with a wider range of new criminal activities, which previously were the stronghold of the Mafia, including the Rizzuto family,” de Champlain said.

Over the past month, there have been half a dozen attacks on Hells Angels strongholds in Ontario and the Gatineau area of Quebec.

They include fire attacks on a tattoo parlour owned by a Hells Angel from the Woodbridge chapter, and a massage parlour owned by a senior Hells Angel in London.

Those blazes were quickly extinguished but a Muskoka cottage owned by a senior Hells Angel from London was destroyed by fire in December.

African man suing Quebec congregation for alleged abuse .
MONTREAL - A Senegalese man is suing a Quebec-based Catholic congregation for $1.4 million, alleging one of its brothers sexually abused him when he was a boy in the 1980s at a school the religious order ran in Africa. Legal experts consulted by The Canadian Press said they weren't aware of another case where a Canadian religious organization was taken to court for the alleged actions of its members in another country. Max Silverman, the Senegalese plaintiff's Montreal-based lawyer, said the congregation indicated it will contest the Quebec court's jurisdiction, setting up a legal battle over whether the province is the best place to hear the evidence.
