Humboldt Broncos goaltender Parker Tobin will be honoured and laid to rest Sunday with a service in Stony Plain’s Glenn Hall Arena.

The 18-year-old grew up in Stony Plain and played in nearby Spruce Grove and Drayton Valley before being traded to the Broncos. The funeral and celebration of life is scheduled from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Doors open at 11:30 a.m. for viewing and last respects.

Tobin was originally thought to have survived the bus collision last week, which killed 16 people. But a Saskatchewan coroner confirmed Monday he had been misidentified.

Throughout the week, tributes have been pouring in for a young man who loved hockey, supported his teammates and had a great sense of humour.

“Parker was a fine young man who loved hockey and played with passion. He was a team player, a standup guy and an inspiration to his teammates,” the Junior A team Drayton Valley Thunder team said on its website.

Stony Plain Mayor William Choy posted to Twitter Saturday saying the public is welcome to attend the service. Information on the celebration of life is also posted publicly on the funeral home website. The address of the arena is 5300 – 52 Avenue in the Town of Stony Plain, just west of Edmonton.

Tobin attended Forest Green School, Stony Plain Central School and was in the 2017 graduating class at Memorial Composite High School where he attended school for parts of the year while pursuing his competitive hockey career, theParkland School Division said on its website.

Cory Anne Holmlund, whose family billeted Tobin during his stay in Drayton Valley, remembers him as a smart kid with a sense of humour — an avid gamer and a “terrible” dancer who at a moment’s notice would drop everything and help her son with his math homework.

“He was just an all-around great kid,” she said.
