COLLEGE PARK, MD (WCMH) — A school bus driver saved almost two dozen kids from a burning school bus on Tuesday. Reneita Smith was on her last route of the day when the bus started making noises.

Assi asked the bus driver to stop after he saw smoke coming from the house . Assi was able to free Zach from the burning house by opening up a sliding door in the back and calling for him. Thanks to the teen’s efforts, Zach, the dog that Assi calls family , was saved .

"So he was banging on the doors really loud and he woke me up and I went to the door and he said, 'The front of your house is on fire, get out.'"

The family got out, grabbing a pet rabbit and dog on the way. They were sheltered in the bus as the fire department extinguished the flames.

"The firemen, after it was pretty well over, came and told us that if the bus driver hadn't of seen the fire, we would have probably lost the house and our lives at the same time," said Bastarache.

A city spokesperson identified the driver as Vincent Fleck.

"I think he is a godsend," said Bastarache.

"He's definitely got his angel wings. He earned them last night, I tell ya."
