An 82-year-old woman has died from injuries she sustained after a TTC bus was forced to suddenly brake, causing her to fall, said a police press release on Monday.

On May 29, Toronto police said they responded to a call at roughly 9:30 a.m. for a personal injury at Steeles Ave. E., just west of Kennedy Rd. According to the release, a TTC bus was travelling west on Steeles Ave. E., when a white pickup truck, also travelling west on Steeles Ave. E., changed lanes.

Toronto Police Const. David Hopkinson said the pickup truck allegedly cut off the bus when changing lanes, forcing the bus driver to hit the brakes. As a result, an 82-year-old female passenger on the bus fell, said Hopkinson. She was rushed to hospital with life-threatening injuries.

TTC spokesperson Brad Ross called the incident tragic.

“This was a case where the bus had to make an evasive manoeuvre, because it was cut off, and had to apply the brakes in an emergency fashion,” Ross said.

“So, it’s very tragic and our thoughts are with her family and we’re really sorry about what has happened.”

Police are searching for the driver of the white pickup truck who was last seen driving west on Steeles Ave. E., west of Kennedy Rd.

Police are asking anyone with information on the driver or vehicle to come forward. The vehicle is described as a white Ford Super Cab pickup truck with construction-type equipment in the box or cargo area of the truck. The driver is described as male.

Police are also asking the 30-35 people who were on bus #1257 (the 53 Steeles East route) at the time of the incident to contact investigators at 416-808-1950 or call Crime Stoppers anonymously at 416-222-TIPS (8477).
