A man who had just recently moved to Kelowna from Ontario was stabbed to death on Canada Day, police say.

According to Kelowna RCMP, 23-year-old Esa Carriere was involved in a violent altercation in the 1400-block of Water Street shortly before 11 p.m. Sunday.

Carriere was found by police officers near the Queensway bus loop, suffering from life-threatening stab wounds. He was rushed to hospital but he died of his wounds.

Police spokesman Const. Jesse O’Donaghey said Carriere had moved to the Okanagan recently from Missisauga, Ont. In an update to his Facebook page earlier on Sunday, Carriere said he was looking for a place to rent and was working five days a week in Kelowna.

Kelowna RCMP have identified a man found dead in his vehicle on a rural forest service road nearly two weeks ago. In a statement, police said 54-year-old Alexander Louis Hegedus of Peachland, B.C., was found in his vehicle on March 22, 2018.

The RCMP and the B.C. Coroners Service are investigating the circumstances around Carriere’s death and would like to speak with witnesses of the fight or with people who may have been with or seen Carriere in the hours beforehand, as police are looking to establish a timeline of events leading up to his death.

Investigators are also interested in collecting any videos or images taken before, during or following the incident.

Carriere was wearing black jeans, a rope belt and a black shoes with white soles.

Police say he was in his 30s, “non-white,” about 5’11” and 150 lbs. He had brown eyes, long brown hair and facial hair.

RCMP report finds 29 B.C. wildfires were arson .
SURREY, B.C. - An RCMP task force says 29 wildfires are believed to have been deliberately set in British Columbia's Okanagan Valley over the last four years. A report from the task force shows the first two suspicious fires were set on July 7, 2014 in Naramata and Penticton and 10 more were set that year across the Okanagan. In all, eight cities and towns in the region were affected and Staff Sgt. Annie Linteau says other fires include seven sparked between July and August 2015, three set in 2016 and four last year.
