A four-year-old boy has been put in the care of Child and Family Services after police found the toddler in a Winnipeg hotel suite surrounded by drugs.

Police were sent to the Winnipeg hotel in the 200 block of Main Street after a someone concerned about the child alerted authorities.

Officers arrived around 10:30 p.m. on Canada Day and knocked on the suite door, which was opened by a young woman.

Police were able to see a table in the room with money, cell phones, scales and bags of white powder.

A man and the young child were also seated at the table.

A 20-year-old woman and a man, 45, have been charged with numerous drug trafficking and firearms offences.

Both have been detained in custody.

Police were not able to release information on the relationship between the two adults or with the child.

Health Canada says the medications were supplied by Zhejiang Huahai Pharmaceuticals of China and that the valsartan used in the affected products contains an impurity known as N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA). NDMA is a potential carcinogen that could cause cancer with long-term exposure. The recall was issued by the manufacturers of several drugs involving five companies. Drugs containing valsartan are used to treat high blood pressure and help prevent heart attacks and stroke.
