Patenaude used to live in Burnaby, B.C.

She and Shunn were reported missing on April 12, 2016. Their bodies were found the following month.

Neighbour dispute

Reed had an ongoing feud with the couple and threatened to shoot them after they cut brush next to his property in 2013, according to prosecutors. Deputies described Reed as an aggressive neighbour.

After a landslide, Reed sold his property to the county under a flood-mitigation program. Several weeks before Patenaude was killed, she reported that Reed had been illegally squatting, according to charging documents.

Reed testified that he shot Patenaude and Shunn in self-defence after the couple confronted him at his former property. He claimed he "panicked'' and had his brother, Tony Reed, help him bury the couple's bodies and stash the couple's vehicles.

Tony Reed had already turned himself in and led detectives to the couple's gravesite. He was sentenced to 14 months in jail after pleading guilty to rendering criminal assistance.

Prosecutors decided not to seek the death penalty against John Reed. He also was convicted of unlawful possession of a firearm.

During sentencing, the judge said Reed showed no remorse for the killings and at times it appeared to be like a game of chess to him.

Court documents revealed police recovered blood and gasoline-soaked clothing from Reed's residence, along with a number of firearms and a quantity of ammunition.

A "fresh" 9-mm shell casing was discovered outside the locked gate on the driveway that led to the Patenaude and Shunn residence, and also to Reed's old home.

Investigators were able to use Patenaude and Shunn's cellphone pings to discover the remote wooded location where their cars were found, pushed down a steep embankment.

A significant amount of blood was discovered in the cargo area of each vehicle, and both cars were covered with tree branches in an apparent effort to hide them.
