Snapchat has apologized after it was accused of "making light" of domestic violence by posting an ad featuring Rihanna and Chris Brown.

The social media app displayed the "Would You Rather!" ad, which asked whether users would prefer to "Slap Rihanna" or "Punch Chris Brown," but has since been forced to pull it after being criticized by the public.

The commercial appeared to reference Brown's conviction for assaulting Rihanna in his car back in 2009 while they were dating.

Snapchat has now released a statement regarding the ad, which was only published in the U.S., according to BBC's Newsbeat.

Snapchat explained: “The advert was reviewed and approved in error, as it violates our advertising guidelines. We immediately removed the ad last weekend, once we became aware. We are sorry that this happened.”
