Pliskova takes over as world No. 1 following Halep's departure

Pliskova takes over as world No. 1 following Halep's departure Simona Halep lost more than just a shot at the Wimbledon semis on Tuesday, as the Romanian's defeat to Johanna Konta means Karolina Pliskova is the new world No. 1. With a win over Konta, Halep would have wrestled the top ranking away from Angelique Kerber, but her loss means it will be Pliskova who will take top billing instead. Pliskova came to Wimbledon as one of the favorites following a grass-court win at Eastbourne right before the season's third grand slam. The 25-year-old would suffer a shocking second-round defeat to Magdalena Rybarikova, but still sit poised to take over the top ranking if other results fell in her favor.

Tiger Woods is no longer a top 1,000 golfer in the world. The 41-year-old dropped out of the top 1,000 in the Official World Golf Ranking released Monday, and is now ranked 1,005th, by far the worst standing of his career.

Jarring as the number can be, Woods' ranking is significantly hurt due to him spending nearly all of 2016 on the sidelines. The world ranking takes into account only the most recent two years worth of tournaments and performance value gained in those events depreciates over time, so his mostly absent 2016 looms large.
