Martin Kaymer withdraws from PGA Championship with shoulder injury

Martin Kaymer withdraws from PGA Championship with shoulder injury Martin Kaymer has withdrawn from the PGA Championship next week because of an injury to his left shoulder. Kaymer, who won the PGA Championship in 2010 at Whistling Straits for his first major title, also withdrew from the Bridgestone Invitational this week. His brother, Phillip Kaymer, says he has inflammation in the tendon of his upper biceps and doctors have advised stepping away from golf for 10 days. His brother says with treatment every day, doctors expect a fully recovery. © image image Kaymer is not planning to play again until Aug. 24 at the Made in Denmark tournament.

"There's way less interaction," says Jimmy Walker , Mickelson 's playing partner over the first two rounds. "It seems like he's mostly doing it on his own. I don ' t know why he doesn ' t have a real caddie .

This is the second consecutive cut in a major Mickelson has missed since breaking up with his longtime caddie Jim "Bones" Mackay. "There's way less interaction," Walker told our Alan Shipnuck. "It seems like he's doing it mostly on his own. I don ' t know why he doesn ' t have a real caddie ."

After disappointing rounds of 79 and 74 at the PGA Championship, Phil Mickelson crashed out of a major for the second time since parting ways with long-time caddie Jim "Bones" Mackay.

While there's certainly a multitude of reasons for the veteran star's struggles, the switch to younger brother Tim doesn't seem to be going as well as hoped. It's something defending PGA champion Jimmy Walker noticed through 36 holes with Mickelson.

"There's way less interaction," Walker told Alan Shipnuck of Golf.com. "It seems he's mostly doing it on his own. I don't know why he doesn't have a real caddie. I don't. It would really be beneficial to him, I think."

McIlroy, Spieth off to strong starts at Bridgestone Invitational

McIlroy, Spieth off to strong starts at Bridgestone Invitational Rory McIlroy and Jordan Spieth opened with a 3-under 67 at the Bridgestone Invitational, leaving them two shots behind Thomas Pieters of Belgium. Pieters, playing only for the sixth time since he challenged briefly at the Masters this year, holed a 30-foot birdie putt on his final hole at Firestone to finish a day of good scoring with a one-shot lead over Russell Knox.Adam Hadwin of Abbotsford, B.C., is three shots back after a 68 while Mackenzie Hughes of Dundas, Ont., struggled to a 4 over following a 74.The opening two rounds were moved up to the morning because of a forecast of thunderstorms in the afternoon.

Once a year, the caddie could override a Mickelson decision on the course, which came with some exceptions. “And I don ’ t want it. I ’ve known him for 40 years but I don ’ t know his game at that level yet so I ’m not even going to try to step in.”

Mickelson and Mackay were known to have lengthy discussions over practically every shot the left-hander hit, while there doesn't seem to be much strategy with Tim. The opening-round 79 was his worst ever score at the PGA Championship, an event he's played in 24 times.

When the split with Mackay, now working for Golf Channel, was announced after the US Open, Mickelson committed to his brother for the remainder of the 2017 schedule. Given his struggles since making the switch, it's probably a safe bet the partnership won't last longer than that period of time.

Mickelson, Garcia among notables to miss PGA cut .
For the first time since 1995, the PGA Championship won't feature Phil Mickelson on the weekend. The 47-year-old veteran missed the cut at the event for only the second time in his career after struggling to rounds of 79 and 74 around a challenging Quail Hollow track. That left him well off the cut-line and crashing out of his second straight major championship.
