The Wright approach for Raptors guard includes a little pain

The Wright approach for Raptors guard includes a little pain VICTORIA—The pain was real for Delon Wright. The summer grind for the emerging young Toronto Raptors guard hurt but, even with every wince, he knew he had to accept it.And that was just from the massages.Set to assume a much more significant role as he enters his third NBA season, the 23-year-old Wright was introduced to the therapeutic importance of post-workout massages as he progressed through his off-season training program and as good as that might sound, his reality was a bit different.“It loosens your body up,” Wright said, “but it hurts. I didn’t want to do it but I had to.”The sacrifices an athlete has to make.

HONOLULU—Read nothing into the decision to start C.J. Miles in the first exhibition game for the Raptors.

Coach Dwane Casey said he’ll mix and match as the pre-season rolls on, and used Miles in Sunday’s opener here just to get him some court time with the other starters and some game conditioning.

“He had a family situation where he missed like two weeks of workouts,” Casey said of Miles. “He worked his butt off this summer and kind of hit a two-week period where he didn’t get to work. That hurt him a little bit, and hopefully this week and these games will help him get back in game shape.”

Search for missing threes a focal point at Raptors camp

Search for missing threes a focal point at Raptors camp As the Toronto Raptors head into the 2017-18 season, one thing is clear before they have even take a shot: they are missing a lot of threes. Last season, players who dressed for the Raptors and are no longer with them hit a total of 420 three-pointers – the likes of DeMarre Carroll (109); Terrence Ross (142) and Patrick Patterson (94) among them. The Raptors have compensated by adding C.J. Miles (who hit 169 threes for Indiana last year) in free agency and will benefit from a full season of Serge Ibaka, whose 129 threes were split between Orlando and Toronto last year.

Miles and Norm Powell are vying for the other spot in the starting lineup along with Kyle Lowry, DeMar DeRozan, Serge Ibaka and Jonas Valanciunas. But for the first couple of games out of the block, Casey is not settling on anything in the way of a consistent group.

“There won’t be any type of rotation or anything like that. Just get guys some runs, some minutes,” the coach said.

ROOKIE WATCH: OG Anunoby, who made a somewhat surprising appearance in a full-bore practice last week in Victoria, is not ready for a full-bore NBA pre-season game. Casey said the first-round draft pick, still recovering from knee surgery in January, is not expected to play for at least two weeks.

“We played him the other night in the intrasquad scrimmage just to get the rust off and let him run and play,” the coach said. “He wasn’t 100 per cent then. He’s probably a couple more exhibition games away, probably won’t play until the last exhibition game, if then. He’s been going five-on-five, getting hit, but he’s still not 100 per cent.”

Kyle Lowry, Raptors learn to do more with less in training camp

Kyle Lowry, Raptors learn to do more with less in training camp VICTORIA—It took Kyle Lowry about a blink of the eye to determine the biggest change in an NBA training camp over the 13 years he’d been around the league.“Well, we ain’t going seven two-a-days in a row,” the Raptors point guard said Tuesday afternoon. “That definitely changed.”In part because of collectively bargained limits on the allowable number of multiple practice days in training camp, in part this year because of the newly compressed pre-season, in part because teams are now far more cognizant of the need for rest and recuperation, training camp is far less arduous than it once was.The Raptors, for instance, had their lone two-workouts-a-day of the camp week on the delightful campus of the University

RAPID CLIP: Doc Rivers relinquished control of the Los Angeles Clippers front office in the summer, moving back to being the team’s head coach with longtime assistant Lawrence Frank assuming the role of executive vice-president of basketball operations. Rivers experienced no real difference in the off-season.

“My summer didn’t change at all. I still sit with Lawrence and we make the same decisions that we did a year ago,” Rivers said.

One major difference in the Clippers is that they no longer can rely on Chris Paul to engineer their offence.

“They’ll be different, but they’ll find an identity that fits them and doesn’t centre around Chris quarterbacking. You knew where the ball was going to be when he was in the game,” Casey said. “Now the ball is going to be moving around and zinging around, so your defence better adjust accordingly or they’re going to pick you apart. . . . Multiple people will handle the ball.”

FAMILIAR FOES: This is third straight pre-season that the Raptors and Clippers have met, with the teams splitting games in 2015 and 2016 in Los Angeles. They played two other times, with the Clippers winning in 1999 and Toronto victorious in 2008.
