Girardi opens up about Yankees dismissal: 'I thought I would be back'

Girardi opens up about Yankees dismissal: 'I thought I would be back' It's been less than a week since the New York Yankees parted ways with Joe Girardi, and on Tuesday he opened up about the decision that left the Bronx Bombers without his managerial services for the first time in a decade. "I was surprised. With the year that we had and the progress the team had made, I thought I would be back," Girardi told Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic during an exclusive question and answer. "Obviously, there is a ton of talent there, a ton of great young talent. I was excited about that. I thought I'd be back.

“Joe was there for 10 years, had a winning season every year, and he was my first manager," Judge said Tuesday morning on ESPN. "He was the guy that gave me an opportunity, and he always had my back, through the good times and the bad times. It's going to be tough. We're all going to miss Joe, but we'll see who we get for these next couple years.”

On Monday, Girardi had called Judge a "natural born leader" while talking to Mike Francesa on WFAN: "(The) sky's the limit for him."

The Bombers are currently in the process of searching for Girardi's replacement.

As for Judge, he was named a finalist for both AL Rookie of the Year (which he is expected to win) and AL MVP (which he will battle for with Houston's Jose Altuve). “Just to be in the same category as those other guys is pretty special,” he said.

The 25-year-old was also selected to be on the cover of the video game, "MLB: The Show 2018," following a historic campaign in which he slugged a rookie-record 52 homers. “It's tough to describe,” Judge replied when asked for his reaction. “They did a great job with it. I'm happy how it turned out.”

Judge said he only watched Game 5 of the World Series between the Astros and Dodgers. The Bombers came up a win shy of reaching the Fall Classic.

“I'm just happy how our team did this year,” Judge said. “A lot of people were doubting us, saying it was a rebuilding year, and we put together a fantastic year. It didn't end the way we wanted it to, but we put on a show, and it was quite a run.”

Judge plans to take a couple weeks off and do nothing before beginning his offseason workout regiment. He'll be able to see his family and his dog, a German/Australian Shepard mix named Lucky.

NOTES: Judge said he received a TV from Sony after breaking one in the outfield on a batting practice homer.... He said if he wasn't playing baseball he'd be playing football or teaching math or science. Both his parents were teachers.... He said the farthest ball he ever hit was during Cape Cod League, a blast he swears went 600 feet.

9/2: Los Angeles Dodgers:
The Dodgers came up just short in the World Series this year, but they'll be loaded again next season. It will be interesting to see what they do with free agent Yu Darvish, but regardless, the team has the resources and farm system to improve this offseason. Potentially joining a core that includes Clayton Kershaw, Kenley Jansen, Corey Seager, Cody Bellinger and Justin Turner is top outfield prospect Alex Verdugo and top pitching prospect Walker Buehler.
Way-too-early odds to win the 2018 World Series
