Bobby Doerr, a Hall of Fame second baseman and the major league's oldest living former player, died at the age of 99 on Monday.

The Boston Red Sox announced the passing of Doerr in a statement Tuesday.

"Bobby Doerr was part of an era of baseball giants and still stood out as one himself," Red Sox owner John Henry said in the statement, according to The Associated Press. "And even with his Hall of Fame achievements at second base, his character, and personality outshined it all. He will be missed."

Doer, a lifelong friend and teammate of Ted Williams, was a nine-time All-Star who was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1986. The Red Sox retired his No. 1 in 1988.

He retired from baseball after the 1951 season with a lifetime slash line of .288/.362/.461, which included 2,042 hits, 223 home runs, and 1,247 RBIs.

A rare jersey from Jackie Robinson’s historic rookie season with the Brooklyn Dodgers 70 years ago has sold for $2.05 million at auction. The jersey, part of a Heroes of Sports offering by Heritage Auctions, was accompanied by a letter from Robinson’s widow, Rachel, saying it is the one brought home by the Hall of Famer at the end of the 1947 season, when he became the first black player in the majors and earned Rookie of the Year honours. The sale price set a record for a jersey from the post-World War II era, easily topping the $573,600 for a 1955 Sandy Koufax rookie jersey with the Dodgers.
