Giants exercise contract options on lefties Bumgarner, Moore

Giants exercise contract options on lefties Bumgarner, Moore Madison Bumgarner’s $12 million option for the 2018 season has been exercised by the San Francisco Giants, who are determined to keep a talented rotation intact as the club looks to bounce back from a last-place season. The Giants locked up Bumgarner long-term in April 2012 on a $35.56 million, six-year contract through this year. The deal includes another $12 million option for 2019. Bumgarner missed nearly three months this past season following a dirt bike accident during an off day in Colorado on April 20. As planned, San Francisco also exercised the $7 million option for lefty Matt Moore.

The Giants might tear things up and start all over again, but how (or if) they do it depends on whether they commit to Odell Beckham Jr . They have to decide soon.

Odell Beckham Jr . has frequently credited his family, and his good genes, for making him such an effective athlete. (Facebook). Of course, when your son is New York Giants wide receiver Odell Beckham , Jr . it’ s hard to argue that point.

The Giants' biggest problem right now is that Ben McAdoo isn't their biggest problem. That's saying a lot, because based on the results on the field and the reports out of his locker room, he's a huge problem.

They have problems at least as large at general manager, which are only partly related to the specific blame Jerry Reese gets for their 1-8 record. And their biggest problem of all — tying together the coach, general manager, owner, quarterback, record and everything surrounding them — isn't even playing.

Of course this all circles back to Odell Beckham Jr.

Everything with this franchise circles back to Beckham, for whatever reason, very few of which have to do with how he celebrates touchdowns or how his relations with his kicking nets are doing.

New York Giants reinstate cornerback Janoris Jenkins

New York Giants reinstate cornerback Janoris Jenkins Jenkins was suspended indefinitely last week for missing a workout on Monday and not informing coach Ben McAdoo that he would be absent. The Giants re-acquired linebacker Deontae Skinner, who was with the team earlier in the season and was most recently on the Oakland Raiders’ practice squad. Three players who were on the field Sunday were removed from the roster. Defensive end Jordan Williams and defensive back Tim Scott were waived. Both were signed off the Giants’ practice squad last week. Linebacker Nigel Harris (ribs) was placed on injured reserve.

Odell Beckham Jr . has no problem publicly calling for the New York Giants to make a trade, especially when it might involve Jarvis Landry. The Miami Dolphins dealt Jay Ajayi before Tuesday’ s NFL trade deadline, and there were some rumors the Fins would send Landry elsewhere as well.

Love B. Scott reports that New York Giants ' wide receiver, Odell Beckham Jr . used Instagram to post a video of himself singing Marvin Gaye' s "Sexual Healing." That wouldn't have been a problem if he wasn't in a hot tub with his teammate, Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie while singing the song.

Looming above the owners’ decisions on McAdoo, or Reese, or both, is Beckham's contract, and the fact that he's spending the technical last year of his rookie deal with a broken ankle that ended his season in Week 5.

Beckham has his fifth-year option for 2018 ... and that's about all that's certain about the Giants for 2018. They could have a little turnover by firing McAdoo, or a big overhaul by letting go of Reese. But not re-signing Beckham means his time with the franchise was wasted, and that really would be starting from scratch.

Whoever comes in next year, or whoever stays, has to wrestle with the uncertainty about Beckham. And no matter what the coach, general manager and even the owner have grumbled and griped about during Beckhman's tenure — and it seems like they do that far more than they show appreciation for how otherworldly he has played — having his contract status hanging over their heads will be worse.

Bob Costas on the future of football: 'This game destroys people's brains'

Bob Costas on the future of football: 'This game destroys people's brains' Speaking at a sports symposium, broadcaster Bob Costas calls decline of football the most significant story in American sports. “The cracks in the foundation are there,” Costas said. “The day-to-day issues, as serious as they may be, they may come and go. But you cannot change the nature of the game. I certainly would not let, if I had an athletically gifted 12- or 13-year-old son, I would not let him play football.

Odell Beckham Jr .’ s ankle injury clouds his future with the Giants - He missed the first four games of his career due to a hamstring injury, dealt with more hamstring problems in 2015, and played through hip and thumb injuries during the 2016 season — the only year he played all 16

Odell Beckham Jr . was nearly in tears as he was carted off the field during his team, the New York Giants ’, game against the Los Angeles Chargers on Oct. 8. Just moments before, the star wide receiver fell the wrong way on his left ankle while being tackled — yes

In the big picture, he's all they've got right now.

It's already being forgotten that if Beckham were healthy all season, including the preseason, this might be a different year in the Meadowlands, and the doubts about the future for McAdoo, Reese, Eli Manning and others wouldn't even exist. Beckham deodorized a lot about the team and the franchise last season. He’s not around to do it this season.

That will have to be measured against his durability when the Giants start talking about their separate stated goals — his, to be the highest-paid player in the NFL, and theirs, to keep him there. Owner John Mara said after Beckham broke his ankle in the loss to the Chargers in October that it won’t discourage the Giants in contract talks, partly because (as he said at last month’s owners meetings, according to, "Knowing him, he will work so hard to get back. He has so much pride.”

The problem is brass tends to be equally adamant about how immature Beckham is, and how they wish he'd grow up, and how that’s just dragging the team down. How valid that is the way this season has unfolded, since they're hot garbage on offense without him, remains to be seen.

Report: Giants, Cardinals have 'most intense' interest in Stanton

Report: Giants, Cardinals have 'most intense' interest in Stanton A pair of National League clubs looking to rebound from disappointing seasons appear poised to slug it out in the Giancarlo Stanton sweepstakes this winter. While the Philadelphia Phillies and Boston Red Sox have expressed interest in the Miami Marlins slugger, it's the St. Louis Cardinals and San Francisco Giants who reportedly have the "most intense" interest in landing Stanton, one source told Peter Gammons of Marlins' new ownership is poised to shed salary this winter, and dealing their highest-paid player in Stanton is the quickest way to achieve that.

New York Giants Odell Beckham Jr . left practice after his feet became tangled with a defensive back on a deep pass attempt Sunday. As can be seen at the 0:19 mark of the video below

Pro Bowl New York Giants wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr . burst onto the NFL scene in 2014, establishing himself as one of the premier offensive threats on the gridiron. What does the future hold for the New York Giants this season?

Giants go offense in Round 1

But the Giants could decide they'll give McAdoo another chance, or that they'll stay with their decades-long philosophy of staying the course with their internal management hires and strategy and keep Reese. That would mean them making a call about Beckham while sitting on a broiling-hot seat again next year.

Or ... the next general manager and coach get that dropped into their laps, along with undoing the rest of the damage of this season and figuring out who the quarterback of the near-future and distant future will be.

Of course, maybe they won’t view Beckham as the blight on franchise history and on decent society that he's often portrayed to be by the current regime.

That alone would be reason for change, now or later.

Redskins beat Giants 20-10 in turkey of a Thanksgiving gameLANDOVER, Md. - In one particularly embarrassing fourth-quarter sequence that drew boos from the home crowd, Kirk Cousins and the Washington Redskins went from planning to punt on fourth-and-1 to calling timeout and deciding to go for it, to drawing a delay-of-game penalty and, in the end, punting anyway.
