The Habs are Niemi's third team of the 2017-18 campaign. He signed a one-year deal with the Penguins in the offseason, but was placed on waivers after just three games. He then had a two-game stint with the Panthers before being placed on waivers again.

His numbers this season aren't pretty. He owns a record of 0-4-0 with a 6.74 goals-against average and an .822 save percentage.

The move is the result of injuries to both Carey Price and Al Montoya. With Charlie Lindgren shining in the Habs' crease, though, it's doubtful Niemi will see the net.

Canadiens aim to tighten up defence vs. Radulov, high-flying Stars .
Fresh off two humiliating losses in which the Canadiens allowed a total of 11 goals, and off a six-game homestand that saw the Canadiens go 2-3-1, the emphasis is on defence. “Most of the time, if teams do that well, pucks go in at the other end,” said Canadiens coach Claude Julien after Tuesday’s skate. “You gotta start somewhere. We can’t expect to win games 5-4 and 6-5 on a nightly basis. There’s not a team in the league that can do that right now. But I think in our situation, we’ve gotta take care of our own end.”The Canadiens, who rank 27th in the NHL standings, have allowed 74 goals through their first 21 games.
