Blue Jays conducting investigation into spike of positive drug tests

Blue Jays conducting investigation into spike of positive drug tests The Toronto Blue Jays are conducting an internal investigation into a sudden spike of positive drug tests, with six minor-leaguers disciplined over the past week by Major League Baseball for using the steroid Boldenone. A seventh player was suspended in September when Stanozolol metabolites were found in his system, establishing a new single-season high for the club.

In an off-season that’s been particularly slow to develop, Friday’s non-tender deadline has the potential to spark some long-awaited movement.

Granted, the deadline for tendering contracts to arbitration-eligible players won’t do anything to answer the bigger questions of the off-season. The uncertainty surrounding Shohei Ohtani, Giancarlo Stanton and J.D. Martinez will persist long after Friday’s 8 p.m. ET deadline.

But at the very least, teams will trade some non-tender candidates, reach pre-arb agreements with others and cut dozens more loose, adding another layer of depth to the free agent class. The Toronto Blue Jays are expected to non-tender at least one player Friday, and the potential for more movement exists ahead of the deadline.

"It is our responsibility to create an environment and culture where our players know that PED use is not condoned and to give them resources and education to ensure that they do not make these decisions.

Many of the Blue Jays’ 11 arbitration-eligible players appear to be locks for tenders, Josh Donaldson, Marcus Stroman, Kevin Pillar, Aaron Sanchez, Devon Travis and Roberto Osuna among them. While Ezequiel Carrera and Dominic Leone entered the season in marginal roles, both excelled in 2017 and will be worth tendering again especially given that MLB Trade Rumors projects they’ll each earn less than $2 million in 2018.

That’s where the decisions get a little harder for the Blue Jays’ front office…

MLB off-season primer: Transaction glossary, key dates

Tom Koehler, RHP

MLB Trade Rumors projected salary: $6 million

2017 stats: 6.69 ERA, 72.2 innings, 62 strikeouts, 35 walks, 16 HR

The Blue Jays are expected to non-tender Koehler, but they will likely maintain interest in the right-hander after his strong performances out of the bullpen down the stretch. Instead of paying him the $6 million he’d project to earn through the arbitration process, they could look to re-sign him for a couple million on a lower-risk free agent deal.

Aaron Loup, LHP

MLB Trade Rumors projected salary: $1.8 million

2017 stats: 3.75 ERA, 57.2 innings, 64 strikeouts, 29 walks, 4 HR

Loup allowed too many baserunners via walks and hit batters last year, and as a 2018 free agent, he’s no longer a long-term piece.

At the same time, Loup can still generate plenty of strikeouts and groundballs. Plus, he’s by far the club’s most established left-handed reliever in a righty-heavy bullpen. Given that he projects to earn a modest salary, he appears likely to be tendered. Regardless, the Blue Jays will look to add to their left-handed relief options this winter.

Ryan Goins, Util.

MLB Trade Rumors projected salary: $1.8 million

2017 stats: 143 games, .237/.286/.356 batting line, 21 2B, 9 HR, 62 RBI, 31 BB, 96 K

The 2017 Blue Jays relied heavily on Goins, and he responded with a career-high nine home runs and some truly exceptional hitting with the bases loaded (10-for-14, 20 RBI). Big picture, though, he’s a well below average hitter (63 wRC+) and his projected salary’s approaching $2 million, which complicates the decision.

The Blue Jays have been extremely open about their desire to add a versatile middle infielder this off-season, an indication that Goins’ spot on the roster could eventually become quite precarious. In the meantime, though, they seem more likely to tender him as a way to preserve depth.
