The 27-year-old Cole is entering his second year of salary arbitration and is under team control through the 2019 season.

The Houston Astros reportedly made a key addition to their starting rotation, acquiring Gerrit Cole from the Pittsburgh Pirates, a source told Jon Morosi of MLB Network.

The return for the Pirates isn't yet known.

The 27-year-old Cole is entering his second year of salary arbitration and is under team control through the 2019 season.

Last year, the Astros had the sixth-best starting rotation in all of baseball, according to FanGraphs' WAR. They added Justin Verlander late in the year en route to the club's first World Series title in franchise history.

So, it turns out no trade has happened. According to Jeff Passan, the original report was simply a false rumor. getting the impression cole to astros isn't necessarily close, at least not at the moment. also heard last night there was another team trying for cole , too (not the yankees).

The Houston Astros reportedly have not made a deal for Pittsburgh Pirates ace Gerrit Cole , despite a report to the contrary on Wednesday. Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports spoke to a source who said there was "no deal" for Cole and that Jon Morosi of MLB Network's report of a trade was a "false rumor."

Behind Verlander, Cole will join a starting rotation already boasting Dallas Keuchel, Lance McCullers, Charlie Morton, and either Brad Peacock or Collin McHugh, assuming none of them are headed back to Pittsburgh.
