President Donald Trump was noncommittal on Friday about whether or not the Washington Capitals will receive an invitation to the White House to celebrate their Stanley Cup win.

“I think we’ll have the Caps, we’ll see,” Trump said at the White House before departing for the G7 Summit in Quebec, via the New York Post.

Trump early Friday morning took to Twitter to congratulate the local Caps on winning the organization’s first championship.

Trump’s comments on potentially hosting the Capitals came at the same time as when he proclaimed no invitation would be extended to the ultimate NBA champions, which presumably will be the Golden State Warriors, who are on the verge of sweeping the Cavaliers out of the Finals. LeBron James and Stephen Curry both stated this week neither team would visit the White House.

Interestingly, on the NHL front, one Capitals player already has gone on record to state he would not attend a ceremony at the White House with Trump.

“The things that he spews are straight-up racist and sexist,” Caps winger Devante Smith-Pelly told Canada’s National Post. “Some of the things he’s said are pretty gross. I’m not too into politics, so I don’t know all his other views, but his rhetoric I definitely don’t agree with. It [an invitation] hasn’t come up here, but I think I already have my mind made up.”

Trump seems to be setting a precedent this week on how he’ll approach the customary practice of hosting championship teams. The president on Monday abruptly canceled the Philadelphia Eagles’ scheduled visit to the White House planned for Tuesday morning.

A statement issued Tuesday by the White House placed all the blame on the Eagles for the sudden cancellation and accused the team of abandoning their fans. The fallout inspired a week-long conversation concerning Trump’s latest controversial run-in involving the world of sports.

Given the backdrop and all the drama of this week, it will be interesting to see how the situation involving the Capitals and the White House plays out. It’s safe to speculate that anything is possible at this point.
