Some of the World Cup's most cherished records are on the brink of falling once football's biggest spectacle gets underway in Russia.

Here's a look at the records that could be broken at the 2018 World Cup:

Most goals ever (16)

Miroslav Klose's celebrated goal-scoring record might not last beyond this tournament.

Four years after the famous striker broke the legendary Brazilian Ronaldo's record with his 16th goal, Klose's former Germany teammate Thomas Muller has a legitimate shot at reaching the revered achievement in Russia.

In fact, thanks to a somewhat favourable set of group stage opponents, the Bayern Munich star will likely surpass Klose's record if he manages to pile up the goals in the opening phase in his quest to score six to draw level. Muller already has 10 World Cup goals to his name.

Norman Whiteside and Lothar Matthaus can watch Russia 2018 in the comfort that their respective World Cup records will remain intact – just as Just Fontaine and Dino Zoff can too. But other greats are under threat

Messi and Marquez hunt Maradona. Six goals as captain is the World Cup record that Diego Maradona owns. Lionel Messi, who scored four times with the armband at Brazil 2014, requires one to go joint-second beside Gyorgi Sarosi, Uwe Seeler

Most goals as captain (6)

Although Lionel Messi sits well back of the overall record, there's another scoring mark the Argentine star has in his sights.

Messi's production in front of goal at the international level pales in comparison to his record at Barcelona, but the 30-year-old is three away from becoming the World Cup's highest-scoring captain - a record held by his legendary compatriot Diego Maradona.

The record with perhaps the highest likelihood of falling could occur by way of Germany taking on either Argentina or Serbia, as well as through an encounter between Brazil and Sweden.

Any three of those possible match-ups would result in breaking the record for most meetings between two teams at the World Cup.

Mo Salah still appears in discomfort ahead of Russia game

Mo Salah still appears in discomfort ahead of Russia game Mohamed Salah showed signs of discomfort with his injured left shoulder while taking part in Egypt's final training session before the team's World Cup match against Russia on Tuesday. Salah didn't appear to be moving his shoulder fully during upper-body exercises on Monday. Moments earlier, Salah took part in light jogging around the St. Petersburg Stadium field and ran at the back of the group, with one coach gently nudging his left shoulder as the striker dribbled with a ball.

With every World Cup season comes speculation surrounding whether or not the records could be broken and the 2018 World Cup in Russia is no exception. Whether it’s the most goals scored over a single match by one person

Hosting it in Russia stirs the pot up a bit as well (I don’t really think I need to expand on why). With so much unpredictability surrounding the tournament, here’s something we can predict: world cup records are set to broken , and here are the most likely ones to fall.

All three pairings have occurred seven times and whether one of the rivalries is reignited in the knockout rounds will depend on performances in the group stage.

1st player to win back-to-back Golden Balls at World Cup

Messi could add another honour to his name if he manages to produce a performance worthy of winning the Golden Ball, the award given to the best player at the World Cup.

After winning the award in Brazil in the wake of Argentina's loss in the final to Germany, Messi could become the first to win the Golden Ball in consecutive tournaments if he puts on another dominating display in Russia.

Another German could also lay claim to one of the World Cup's most famous records, as Manuel Neuer attempts to become the overall leader in clean sheets.

Although his role heading into the tournament with the defending champion is unclear following a season in which he was sidelined by a foot injury before recently making a return, Neuer is four clean sheets away from breaking the record held by both England's Peter Shilton and France's Fabian Barthez.

Oldest player to feature in a World Cup match (43)

Essam El-Hadary just needs one chance to become the oldest player to feature in a World Cup match.

At 45, the Egyptian goalkeeper isn't guaranteed a place in the starting team despite helping the nation qualify for the World Cup for the first time since 1990.

If he's given a shot, El-Hadary will beat Faryd Mondragon's record, which was set just four years ago.

Over-reliance on James Rodriguez could see the Colombia star become the first player to score in every match in consecutive World Cups.

The 26-year-old stole the show at the 2014 tournament when his incredible scoring display led to Colombia's first-ever appearance in the quarter-finals.

His sixth goal in five matches came in the quarter-final loss to Brazil, which was a mark good enough secure the Golden Boot award as the tournament's top scorer.

On the heels of a solid season at Bayern Munich, Rodriguez could be poised to go on another tear and continue his stunning form at the World Cup.
