What a mess.

The Ottawa Senators are spiraling out of control. There is a laundry list of disfunction facing the franchise right now. Mike Hoffman's girlfriend, Craig Anderson's unrest, and their assistant GM's sexual harassment charges just to name a few. Now they have this rumor to add to the list.

Erik Karlsson, the teams best player and captain, is rumored to have asked for a trade. This isn't really a surprise as it seemed like the Senators were already actively shopping Karlsson in preparation for his departure in free agency in 2019.

The San Jose Sharks are among “several teams” that have discussed trades involving superstar defenseman Erik Karlsson with the Ottawa Senators , reports The Athletic’s Pierre LeBrun.

With all the drama it is no surprise Karlsson wants out now before the team devolves any further. He is apparently citing emotional distress over the Hoffman scandal as one of the main reasons why he requested a trade. It seems like Karlsson wants this done sooner rather than later. Or maybe he doesn't?

Apparently the reporter who broke the rumor, Ray Ferraro, says he never said Karlsson requested a trade. This is certainly an interesting wrinkle in the whole story.

The Senators have about a week to figure this out. The NHL Draft is next Friday and that would be a prime situation to move Karlsson if they so chose. If there is any truth to this rumor be on the look out for a blockbuster trade next week in Dallas.
