Toronto Blue Jays manager John Gibbons is disappointed yet hopeful for Roberto Osuna, who is eligible to return from suspension in early August stemming from a violation of Major League Baseball's Joint Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault, and Child Abuse Policy.

"I'll be glad to see (Osuna)," Gibbons told Mike Wilner of Sportsnet. "I'm very disappointed in what happened, but I love the kid. I hope it all gets resolved - the penalty, counselling, whatever it is - and he can turn his life around.

"If (Osuna) comes back and he's on the team, he'll be our closer eventually, if not right away," the Jays skipper continued. "I'm not going to punish him. But I hope everything works out the right way for everyone involved."

Now, to be fair, John Gibbons was more measured in his response: “You’re dealing with human beings, regardless of walk of life . Given all this, there are three reasons I can see why the Blue Jays aren’t tempering their statement about Osuna . The first is that they know something — something that

“You’re dealing with human beings, regardless of the walk of life ,” Jays manager John Gibbons said, choosing his words carefully. Toronto Blue Jays closer Roberto Osuna was placed on administrative leave on Tuesday after being charged with assault.

Osuna was arrested and charged with assault in early May, prompting Major League Baseball to place him on the restricted list. After conducting their own investigation, the league suspended Osuna for 75 games.

Osuna, whose legal team has entered a not-guilty plea, has been ordered not to contact the female victim, whose identity has been protected. The criminal proceedings have not yet been resolved, with Osuna's next court date scheduled for July 9.

Gibbons' comments about Osuna's potential usage on the team come one week after Blue Jays general manager Ross Atkins stated plainly that there would be "no reason" why the right-hander would not resume closing duties immediately.

The 23-year-old Osuna is slated to begin a rehab assignment on July 14, and will be eligible to return to the major-league roster as early as August 5.
